FAQ
I am working on a Mac, and when I double click the program's .jar file, it says that "it can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer"
Since the release of Mac OS Sierra, The Apple Security Program "GateKeeper" does this for any software not distributed through the Mac store. To override this behavior for GenePalette, hold down the Control button, and click on the jar. From the drop-down menu select "Open". The program should launch, and it should just open on subsequent double clicks
I am working on a Mac, and the main program screen won't come up when I open the program
Make sure that the program is in your home directory. Java will not have access to open the program if it is located in your downloads folder or on the Desktop.
I submit my registration information, and the browser gives me an error. How can I download GenePalette?
This problem seems to occur because of certain firewall settings. If you experience this, please email [email protected].
The OrthologGrabber module ("Retrieve Orthologous Sequences from UCSC") won't launch.
This problem is likely due to an older version of java being used to launch this module from GenePalette. You can update the version of java that is launched from within java by downloading the latest java developer kit here.
How big of a sequence can the program load?
It varies from computer to computer, but on my machine (Macbook Pro, 8GB RAM), it handles several megabases (3-5Mb) with no problems. Once you get much larger than that, things really slow down. Sequence alignments that include multiple larger sequences (>100-200 kb) can be computationally cumbersome. If the need arises (and enough people complain), we might add support for larger sequences.
How should I cite GenePalette?
If you used GenePalette in your work, please reference our paper describing the tool:
GenePalette: a universal software tool for genome sequence visualization and analysis.
Rebeiz M, Posakony JW. Dev Biol. 2004 Jul 15;271(2):431-438. We are currently writing up the newest version for publication...Stay tuned!
How can I help?
There are a lot of ways that we could benefit from the help of our users. First, we can always use bug reports, and user comments to improve the program. Many of our favorite features were suggested by users. Another way to help is to put a link to our program on your website. Every link counts in our battle to get to the top of someone's Google search. The final way to help the GenePalette cause is to cite our paper if you used the program in your research (see above)
